Boys' basketball

- The RHS JV boys' team scored victories over Northland Pines and Medford in its last two contests.

Rhinelander raced out to a big early lead and cruised to a 56-34 victory over the JV Eagles Jan. 31 at the Northland Pines High School Fieldhouse. The Hodags led 18-7 after one quarter and 35-17 at halftime.

Matt Bloch led a balanced Rhinelander attack with 14 points. Ryan Dart added eight points and Eric Fabish and Kent Mathews each had six as all 13 players active for the game scored at least one point.

The team pulled away in the final minutes to earn a 59-46 victory over the Medford Raiders Jan. 27 at the Jim Miazga Community Gymnasium. Medford led 27-24 at halftime and hit nine 3-pointers during the course of the game to stay in it, but the Hodags led by six with six minutes to play and finished the game on a 12-5 run to secure the win.

Darren McGuire paced the Hodags with 13 points, Dart had 10, Austin Bowman had nine and Tyler Thorsen added seven. The Hodags drained six 3-point field goals on the night.

- The RHS freshman team also dispatched Northland Pines and Medford in its two most recent contests.

The Hodags routed Northland Pines 61-22 Jan. 31 in Eagle River. R.J. Eades had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Wendt has 11 points. Cole Oettinger scored 10 and Brendan McGuire chipped in nine.

"I liked our defensive pressure," RHS freshman coach Jason Kremer said. "We threw a lot of different defensive looks at Pines and it really kept them guessing. This was a game that everyone contributed to the win, every player on the roster had at least four points."

The team downed Medford 43-35 on Jan. 27 at the Central Intermediate School gym. Wendt led the Hodags with an 18-point, 4-rebound effort. Oettinger had 12 points and seven rebounds. Eades added eight points and six boards.

"Our defensive pressure gave Medford trouble," Kremer noted. "We had an outstanding team effort where all players contributed to the victory."
