Thirteen Three Lakes High School students traveled to Spain with their Spanish teacher, Nicole Losch, over spring break.
The nine-day trip was sponsored by Education First (EF) Tours. This company has more than 40 years of experience in leading student trips in over 50 countries. The trip started with a flight out of Minneapolis to Madrid on March 30. The students spent two nights in Madrid seeing works of art from Goya, Velázquezs, Picasso, and El Greco at the famous Prado Museum. Their time in Madrid concluded with a tour of the Palacio Real (the Royal Palace), The Plaza Mayor, the Puerta del Sol, along with time shopping on the Gran Via (the main shopping center of Madrid).
The students then traveled by coach bus, with another group of 20 students from the D.C. area, to Toledo, touring the old neighborhood of this former capital of Spain. They also were fortunate to see one of Spain's finest paintings by Fransico de Goya, "The Burial of Count Orgaz." They continued on to Granada that same day, where they would spend the next two nights.
Granada, home of the famous La Alhambra, was the last Spanish city claimed from the Muslims by the monarch kings on Jan. 2, 1492. The students had a two-hour guided tour of La Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace, before traveling to Seville, another famous city in the southern region of Andalusia.
Arriving in Seville at night allowed the students to witness Spain's culture first-hand at a local Flamenco Show. There were six different dancers who performed a variety of dances for the audience of approximately 250.
The next day started with a bus tour of the international pavilions scattered throughout the Guadalquivir River Walk that were built for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929. The most of famous of these is Seville's own Plaza de España, which represents each region of Spain with very elaborate art-deco style walls circling around the ponds, bridges, and beautiful fountains.
Finally, the students traveled south for their final three nights on the Mediterranean Coast. They stayed in the town of Torremolinos, which is a suburb of the city of Málaga. With nearly three million inhabitants, Málaga is the capital city of the region of Andalusia. The students took a day-trip from there to Morocco, Africa. On this excursion they traveled to the southern most tip of the Iberian Peninsula, to the Straights of Gibraltar. There they took a 45-minute ferryboat ride to the Spanish Colony of Ceuta on the African coast. From Ceuta they were bussed to Morocco, where a local guide took them through the third-world streets of the old city.
Students were then treated to a local dish of coos-coos with curried chicken and the local mint tea. Some students were able to ride a camel or buy local Moroccan rugs to be shipped home before returning to the bus and the ferry ride back to the hotel in Torremolinos.
Before flying from Málaga up to Madrid and then across the ocean, these Three Lakes students were able to enjoy a beach day. Near the hotel they were able to walk through the streets down to the Mediterranean beach, visiting local vendors and buying souvenirs.
The last evening at the hotel, the students were pleasantly surprised to be witnesses to one of Spain's Catholic Posadas, or processions, during Holy Week. After seeing that cultural event, the students packed their suitcases and prepared for the 30-hour journey to Minneapolis. Their trip concluded with a hotel stay in Bloomington, Minn. and the drive back to the Northwoods on Easter Sunday.
The students and the Three Lakes Spanish Club would like to thank all the local supporters of this trip including the students, parents, and community members who bought items in the past two years at the bake sales, the iPod raffle, the Blue Jay mitten sales, and the Spain dinner at the Reiter Center last May 2011. Without this help and support the educational trip may not have been possible for the 13 students and their teacher.
