Mock car accident exercise for high schoolers scheduled for April 24
The accident will be staged at the intersection of Larch Street and Coolidge Avenue, and will involve numerous emergency vehicles that will be parked near the high school.
The exercise will put an emphasis on the dangers of texting while driving, and drinking and driving. Organizers indicate this is an exercise and the community can expect to see emergency responders at the Rhinelander High School looking and acting as if it were a true disaster. Even though the car accident will be staged, the response will be real. Accident victims will be treated on scene as they would during a real car accident. Jaws of life will be used and both ambulances and helicopters will be used to transport mock accident victims.
At approximately 8:10 a.m., after buses depart from Rhinelander High School, the following streets will be closed in preparation of the mock car accident exercise: Coolidge Avenue from Acacia Lane to Johnson Street and, from the First Congregational United Church of Christ (135 E. Larch Street) to Coolidge Avenue. Streets will be reopened at approximately noon.
Participating agencies include: Rhinelander High School, Rhinelander Fire Department, Pelican Volunteer Fire Department, Crescent Volunteer Fire Department, Newbold Volunteer Fire Department, Pine Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Oneida County EMS, Spirit Air 2, MedEvac Ground and Helicopter, Oneida County Sheriff's Office, Oneida County Emergency Management, Oneida County Medical Examiner's Office, and Wisconsin State Patrol.
