Thursday, sixth through ninth graders at Northwoods Community Secondary School (NCSS) got a few lessons in fire safety from the Rhinelander Fire Department. The fire safety day was organized by NCSS senior Blake Jensen, who is a volunteer firefighter with Pine Lake, and plans on attending Nicolet College after graduation with aspirations of working full-time as a firefighter or paramedic. The fire safety day was a community service project for Jensen. A classroom at NCSS was "smoked out" with a fog machine, and students had to crawl their way to safety. Members of the fire department also did a demonstration on how to properly operate a fire extinguisher.
