Bowling
Rhinelander's Youth Bowling League came to a close Saturday, March 31. Hodag Lanes treated the bowlers and their families to black light bowling, pizza, cake and plenty of awards. Beginning in late September, these young bowlers have dedicated their Saturday mornings to participating in a United States Bowling Congress (USBC) sanctioned league.
Age divisions within the league begin with the Bumper Bowlers, who are generally under the age of six. This is a flexible guideline and graduating to the next level is determined by the readiness of the individual. Bantam bowlers are ages seven and eight, Preps are ages nine through 12, Juniors are ages 13 through 16, and Majors are ages 17 through 19. The league focuses on sportsmanship, etiquette, and learning proper technique. Each bowler strives to improve their personal average while competing on a four-member team. This year, bowlers also had the opportunity to qualify for the Youth Pepsi Championship which awards monetary scholarships.
Members of this year's top USBC youth team were Kimmy Czekus (also earning girls' high average of 192), Justine Cline, Darin Bloomquist (also earning boys' high average of 177) and Kevin Beckman. The league's second place team included members Christopher Connors, Calvin Schneider, Tommy Strauss and R.J. Eades. Earning recognition in the league for showing most improvement were Bethany Stelbrink, girls' average up 20 pins, and Justin Cline, boys' average up 20 pins.
Awards were also given to the best bowlers in each age division. Earning top honors among the Bumper Bowlers were Abi Winnicki, girls' high average of 79; Caleb Shefveland, boys' high average of 84; Sophia Turner, most improved girls' average (+12 pins); and Garrett Hull, most improved boys' average (+20 pins). Superior bowlers in the Bantam Division included Skye Barker, high series of 281; Makenna Winnicki, girls' high game of 108; and Dusty Eades, boys' high game of 149.
Winners in the Prep Division included Mackenzie Bourcier, girls' high game of 172; Chris Anderson, boys' high game of 176; Alexis Kriesel, girls' high series of 246; and Darin Bloomquist, boys' high series of 670. Garnering awards in the Junior Division were Bailey Nebgen, girls' high game of 194; Justine Cline, boys' high game of 257; Kimmy Czekus, girls' high series of 664; and Tommy Strauss, boys' high series of 642. Superior honors in the Major Division went to Kevin Beckman for a high game of 257.
Hodag Lanes sponsors a youth bowling league every season. Anyone interested in getting additional information may contact Youth League Director, Sharon Cline at (715) 482-3814.
