Dance the night away

There was something sweet and magical when fathers, dressed in nice suits, and their little princesses took to the dance floor Saturday night for the YMCA of the Northwoods' Father-Daughter Dance at the Quality Inn.

The fathers twirled, jumped and wiggled about with their daughters, who were grinning from ear to ear.

"(My daughter is) enjoying herself," said Jarrod Haenel, a first-timer at the event. "I think it's great (that the Y does this). This town needs more for kids to do really and this one came up and she wanted to do it and I'm more than happy to do it, I think it's awesome."

"So far, because it's my first year, I really, really like it," Alayna Haenel added.

Brent Kadubek and his daughter, Carlee, have attended the Father-Daughter Dance four times. It is something they look forward to each year.

"We like it, we like it a lot," he said. "She looks forward to it every year so it's something we do together. (My favorite part of the event is) just seeing her get excited for it and get ready for it. I think it's a neat function for the kids, they really like it."

"(My favorite part is) that I get to dance with my dad," Carlee said.

Steve Detienne and his daughter have attended the dance three times.

"We like it a lot then, as long as Emily is happy," Detienne said. "I think it's great because we have an older son that we all do stuff together and it's nice just being alone (with my daughter)."

Emily said the feeling is mutual.

"It's really fun because (my dad and I) will jump around and I will jump and he'll lift me in the air," she said. "It's really fun because you can dance and you get food and there are some other things that you can do."

Emily's favorite song is "UpTown Funk!" by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars.

"It's nice that the Y does this," Detienne said. "We have a good time."

"Secret Garden" was the them of this year's dance. The room was decorated in strings of lights and chiffon cloth that was draped from the center of the ceiling to the corners of the room. Near the dance floor was a little bench and and archway illuminated with spiraled lights and decorated with flowers and sheer cloth. Baskets of ivy sat on either side of the archway.

"(For the theme) we've got spring come early and all the foliage and the flowers it came together nicely," said Chris Cook, wellness and marketing director at the YMCA of the Northwoods.

The numbers were up from last year, with around 120 people attending the dance.

"I think we had a great turnout this year, we have more couples than we did last year," said Abbie Cline, school age director at the YMCA of the Northwoods. "I think they like it a lot. It's a great opportunity for them to get together and spend a day or the evening having some daddy-daughter time."

"I think it's a great success," Cook added. "I think it's a really unique opportunity for dads and daughters to have a special night for them especially if they haven't had the opportunity or chance to have a night for just the two of them."

Cline said she had fun decorating the room and watching the fathers and daughters have a good time.

"I think it's a blast," she said. "It's so much fun to plan and to set up and it's really heartwarming and adorable to see the dads come out with their special little ladies. If you are a dad out there and you're looking for something to do with your little girl then you should take advantage of it, it's a great evening."
