RHS Sports recap: Friday, May 2
Baseball: Tomahawk 1, Rhinelander 0
A walk and back-to-back hits with two out in the third inning proved to be the difference Friday as Tomahawk edged the RHS baseball team in a pitchers’ duel 1-0 in Tomahawk.
Cash Olsen hit an RBI double down the left field line for the game’s lone run, making a tough-luck loser out of Conner Rappley, who scattered two hits, struck out nine and walked five over five innings.
Rhinelander outhit Tomahawk 4-2 and put the tying run on second with two out in the seventh, but Tyler Chariton flew out to deep left to end the game.
Rhinelander (5-6, 2-4 Great Northern) travels to D.C. Everest on Monday.
Golf: Rhinlander 2nd/7, GNC Meet No. 2
The Rhinelander High School golf team shot 315 and was the runner-up Friday in the second leg of the Great Northern Conference tournament at Inshalla Country Club in Tomahawk.
Senior Sam Schoppe played his final seven holes in 3-under to shot 2-over 72 on the day and take medalist honors by two strokes over Lakeland’s Davis Kock. Freshman Grant Gremban also finished in the points, shooting 78 and tying for seventh.
Brody Kowieski bogeyed his last hole to shot 80 and miss the top 10 by a stroke. Blake Petroff shot 85 and Hank Kowieski carded an 86. Rhinelander finished only three strokes behind Lakeland for first on the day.
The GNC tournament will continue Tuesday at Bass Lake Golf Club in Deerbrook, hosted by Antigo.
Track: RHS girls 4th/11, boys T9th/11, Kaukauna Invite
The RHS girls’ track team recoded nine top-five finishes and placed fourth at the Kaukauna Invite on Friday.
For the fourth time this season, the school record in the girls’ pole vault fell. Sophomore Macy Myers became the first female in RHS history to clear 10 feet in the event as she took second on Friday. Aila Bergman was second in the 300-meter hurdles, third in the 100 hurdles and third as part of the 4x400 relay team with Violet Biolo, Ellie Cummings and Lucy Eddy.
The Hodag boys scored four top-four finishes as they tied for ninth in the meet. The 4x800 relay team of Shawn Denis, Jackson Weinzatl, Greyson Gremban and Avrom Barr placed second in that event. Barr was fourth in the 1,600 meters, Gremban took fourth in the 3,200 and Reid Schultz added a fourth-place performance in the shot put
The Hodags return to action Tuesday at the Lakeland Invite.
Boys’ tennis: Rhinelander 0-2, Wausau West Invite
The Rhinelander High School boys’ tennis team dropped both of its matches in Wausau on Friday, losing to Bay Port 4-3 and Pulaski 5-2 in the Wausau West Invite.
The Hodags swept doubles against Bay Port with Aiden Ostermann/Michael Schiek, Karter Massey/Payton McCue and Van Tulowtizky/Hart Hokens securing the wins.
Massey and McCue moved up to No. 1 doubles against Pulaski and prevailed in a match tiebreak 6-3, 3-6, 13-11. Asher Rivord picked up Rhinelander’s only other win, at No. 4 singles.
The Hodags are back in Wausau Saturday to continue the invite.
