Arnold O. Hulce of Rhinelander passed away Thursday, Sept. 7, 2017, at Rennes Health & Rehab Center at the age of 85. Arnie was the last of 14 children to be born in a one-room cabin constructed of tar paper over a dirt floor, a roof made of tin with no running water on Tuesday, June 21, 1932 in Spirit Falls, Wis. He was the son of Fay and Bertha (Krebs) Hulce. When Arnie was just 4 years old, his father Fay died. This required the family to eventually move to Rhinelander. He attended elementary school and completed high school in Rhinelander through the 11th grade. Arnie then moved to Kenosha to assist his brother with his business and attend his final year of his high school education. He then moved back to Rhinelander where he was united in marriage on Sept. 12, 1953 to Mickey McKenzie. The couple enjoyed 40 years of marriage.

During this time, Arnie was employed with the Rhinelander Brewery, where he worked until he was able to secure a job at the Rhinelander Paper Company. Arnie worked there for the next 27 years and achieved the title of Journeyman Millwright, of which he was very proud. In 1984, Arnie and Mickey moved to Menasha, where he was employed at Wisconsin Tissue Mills and where he retired from in 1994. Mickey passed away on Nov. 16, 1993. After retiring, Arnie moved back to Rhinelander. Arnie and Mickey owned property on Crescent Lake for many years and Arnie enjoyed swimming and snorkeling there. He enjoyed having a vegetable garden, astronomy, golfing, fishing, hunting, watching the Packers play, and every first Tuesday of the month meeting up with other retired workers from the paper company at the Northwestern for lunch and playing cards. During his younger years, Arnie was active on bowling leagues and pool leagues but as the years have passed the most important part of his life was his family, especially the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He will be dearly missed by his children: Janelle (Jim) Dwyer of Cecil, Wis., Lisa (Mike) Zwiebel of Freedom, Wis., and Scott and Kelly Hulce of Rhinelander; grandchildren: Jason Cahak, Shayni (Bryan) Mischler, Justin Meeleus, Amber and Aubrey Hulce and Rachel Zwiebel; great-grandchildren: Mackenzie, Greyson, Gavin, Logan Meeleus, Melanie Baba-Zwiebel, Raven Mischler and Lillian and Abigail Cahak. Arnie is further survived by a sister-in-law Joyce (Bob) Dustrude of Wausau, and by many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his 13 siblings. In accordance with Arnie's wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Inurnment will take place at Forest Home Cemetery. Hildebrand Funeral Home& Cremation Specialists, 24 E. Davenport Street, Rhinelander, Wisconsin 54501, 715-365-4343. Celebrating lives and healing hearts.
