Richard Smith, born in August of 1945, passed away Aug 24, 2017 after a long battle with diabetes.

He relocated to Kelso from Wisconsin 50 years ago with his wife and boys. He worked at Reynolds Aluminum and retired from there just prior to the shutdown. He loved to go hunting, fishing, scuba diving or anything to do with the outdoors. Three years ago he developed complications from the diabetes and lost his legs. He didn't let that get to him as he figured out other things to do and other hobbies to pursue. He found ways to stay active outdoors even if it was mowing the lawn. He started building birdhouses and feeders and doing some wood carving. Several people now have these treasures hanging in their trees or fence...Cherish them! He loved to spend time with his grandkids and taught them how to shoot, fish, weld and build birdhouses. Richard aka "Smitty" to his Reynolds buddies was a good man and tried to leave a positive outlook with all that he met. Sadly, his fight with diabetes took its toll on him and he will be greatly missed.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife Rose Mary, mother Zada, father Clifford Sr., brother Clifford Jr. (Ruth), and sisters Lillian O'Brian and Delores Westman (George); niece Laurie Long, niece Terry Hicks and nephew Randy Smith.

He is survived by his three sons: Rick (Kim), Mark and Allen (Teri), his three sisters Alice Simmons, Marjorie (Joe) Gechas and Patty Raske, his six grandchildren Mackenzie, Kelsey, Wyatt, Allen, Brandon and Amanda, his great-grandson Noah and several nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of life is planned for Sept. 10 at the Eagle Club 1526 12th Ave, Longview, Wash. from 1 to 4 p.m. with the eulogy to start at 1:30 p.m. There will be a memory box that will be open to drop off an object or story. Please come by and reflect with his family and share your stories.
