A 25-year-old Madison man accused of leading local law enforcement on a high-speed chase Sunday evening has been charged with three felonies and five misdemeanors.

Sanome R. Wheelock was advised of the charges - two counts of operating a vehicle while revoked, two counts of attempting to flee an officer, operating while intoxicated (second offense), operating a motor vehicle without the owner's consent, hit and run, and failure to obey a traffic signal - Tuesday afternoon in Oneida County Circuit Court before Judge Patrick O'Melia.

According to the complaint, deputy Nancy Reklau was traveling southbound on State Highway 47 in the town of Newbold at approximately 7:19 p.m. Sunday when she observed a vehicle traveling northbound at a high rate of speed. According to her report, Reklau pursued the vehicle as it made a series of turns. At one point, she states, the other vehicle "attempted to ram" her squad car and then took off.

She reports she continued to follow the vehicle and the chase reached speeds of over 120 miles per hour. Eventually, the operator opened the driver's door and took off on foot, according to the report.

A female passenger who was still in the vehicle told police the driver's name was Sanome Robert Wheelock. She advised that Wheelock, who she referred to as her nephew, ran from police because he had been consuming intoxicants.

Empty beer cans and empty bottles of Fireball were found in the vehicle, according to Reklau's report.

The passenger advised that she and Wheelock were on their way to pick up Wheelock's girlfriend who was just released from jail, but noted that she didn't know their exact destination. The passenger also told police she was fearful of being in an accident and had been trying to get Wheelock to stop the vehicle.

The passenger was arrested on a charge of open intoxicants-passenger.

Approximately two hours later, Oneida dispatch received a call from a Newbold resident reporting that someone had just stolen her vehicle from her driveway.

Several deputies, as well as officers from Woodruff and Minocqua, were dispatched to State Highway 47 in search of the stolen vehicle. The search for Wheelock was also ongoing.

At approximately 9:44 p.m., Minocqua officers Matthew Tate and Gary Loduha advised the suspect vehicle had been in an accident and the operator was on foot. After a perimeter was set up, Tate and Loduha were able to locate and arrest Wheelock.

According to the report of officer Sara Wolosek, Wheelock threatened to kick out the windows of a squad vehicle during transport to jail and was generally unruly and uncooperative.

"Wheelock kept stating I was treating him like a criminal because of him running from us," Wolosek wrote in her report. "Wheelock told me that he was not going to run anymore and I should just take his word for it."

In court Tuesday, Oneida County district attorney Mike Schiek characterized Wheelock's behavior as "extremely aggravated" and noted he has both a criminal history and a history of not appearing in court.

Given those factors, the prosecutor requested bond be set at $20,000 cash.

After hearing Schiek's argument and noting that Wheelock has no clear ties to this area, O'Melia set bond at $25,000 cash with conditions he not consume intoxicants or enter taverns.

An adjourned initial appearance was set for 2:30 p.m. Nov. 13.

Wheelock faces more than five years in prison if convicted of all of the charges.
