"By completing this intensive training, Mike, one of our state's top public safety experts, was able to learn from some of our nation's top public safety experts," said Schimel. "As deputy for the DOJ division that focuses on training Wisconsin's law enforcement, Mike will be able to use the knowledge he gained at the institute to make a positive difference in communities across our state."
Steffes, who came to DOJ in October 2016 after serving as Rhinelander Chief of Police, completed the three-week intensive training with the FBI in September 2017.
"It was truly an honor to attend the National Executive Institute," said Steffes. "I was able to learn from classmates from around the country and world and learned many new ideas to aid DOJ's officer wellness program."
The National Executive Institute, known as the "Director's own program" and the "crown jewel of the FBI's executive training series," covers national and international political, economic, and social trends affecting the policing function; ethics and integrity; the effects of affirmative action on hiring and promotional policies; media relations; labor relations; the future structure of police organizations; financing of police operations; training and legal issues; labor relations; and the impact of criminal activity on policing. The training also focuses on building partnerships domestically and internationally.
