Mary and Paul made their way to Eagle River in 1973. Mary worked for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for 19 years and was the director for 17 of those years. Mary was responsible for recruiting and signing up over 2000 volunteers. Mary helped Paul open and operate Paul's Pump and Pantry, O'Brien's Pub, and Depot Hobbies. Prior to her retirement, she worked at the First National Bank in Eagle River for 17 years where she held a number of different positions helping many people. Mary enjoyed knitting, scrapbooking, traveling, and many social activities. She delighted in working with and being around people and supported many community organizations. Above all she loved spending time with her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and grandson: Galen Doucette.
Mary, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother is survived by her loving husband of 54 years: Paul W. O'Brien of Eagle River; sons: Jim (Marcia) of Rochester, Minn., Marc (Cheryl) of Boulder Junction, Kraig (Tammy) of Sun Prairie; grandchildren: Jessica (Justin) Scurte of Yorkville, Ill., Geoffrey O'Brien of Burnsville, Minn., Shalom Doucette of Baraboo, Tyler and Ethan O'Brien of Sun Prairie; great-granddaughters: Elle and Brianna Scurte of Yorkville, Ill.; numerous other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, 2017 at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
Paul and his family extend a special thank you to Ascension Eagle River Hospital and especially the nursing staff for their passionate care.
Memorials may be made in Mary's name to: St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church in Eagle River; Pink Ribbon Riders; Eagle River Recreation Association; Eagle River Lions Club; Salvation Army; or the American Cancer Society.
