Atwood "Shorty" E. Sherry, age 92, of Rhinelander, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017 at his residence. He was born in Rhinelander on Thursday, December 18, 1924. He proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946. He was united in marriage on Sept. 9, 1949 to Margie Wilcox. Atwood was employed for 12 years at Kabel's Garage, Ed Windlen's Pontiac and Cadillac, Tom Swift Motors, Foltz's Motor's and at Lassig where he was a mechanic. From 1968 until 1986 Atwood was the owner and operator of Sherry's Auto Repair and Transmission. He was a mechanic all his life and loved what he did and his favorite thing to do was to work. You could find him working in the shop on a car, in the yard, or in the garden. He was a member of the NRA and enjoyed participating in NRA banquets in Rhinelander. Atwood participated in the Honor Flight and was a proud supporter. He enjoyed attending auctions, hunting, fishing, smoking fish, camping, and old country music. Atwood will be remembered for his self-sufficient can do attitude, being a hard worker and his love for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and his companion, Mickey John. He was a member of Grace FourSquare Church. Surviving are children Diane Schneeweis of Crandon, Karen (Kevin) Lake, Connie Hablewitz and Alvin (Rebecca) Sherry, all of Rhinelander; three grandchildren Lynn Teschendorf of Green Bay, W Joe Lake and Gretchen of Madison, John (Michelle) Lake of Madison, and two great-grandchildren; Brianna Teschendorf and Brandy Teschendorf.

Atwood was preceded in death by his parents; wife Margie Sherry in 2004, and a son-in-law Bob Schneeweis. The visitation for Atwood will be held on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017 at the Hildebrand Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. and on Monday morning at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service. Pastor Julie Wilcox will be officiating. Military honors conducted by the Ray Rousseau V.F.W. Post #3143 and two representatives from the United States Army will take place at the funeral home immediately following the funeral service.
