Gregory J. Gardner, a 22-year veteran of the sheriff's office, announced his candidacy for the office of Oneida County Sheriff via a press release issued late Monday. Gardner is a lifelong resident of Oneida County and currently resides in the township of Sugar Camp.
According to the press release, Gardner's campaign is promoting a message of "transparency, experience, and integrity." "He welcomes scrutiny and understands that he is responsible to the taxpayers of Oneida County," the release states.
After serving four years as a military policeman in the U.S. Army, Gardner began pursuing a career in law enforcement, the release states. After graduating from Nicolet College, he was hired in 1995 by sheriff Tim Miller.
"Gardner has a long and distinguished career with Oneida County," the release states. "He has worked as a Deputy Sheriff, Detective Sergeant and currently holds the rank of Sergeant. As a Deputy Sheriff, he was a Field Training Officer and Special Response Team Member. As Detective Sergeant, he was responsible for conducting detailed and intensive criminal investigations of such serious offenses as Homicide, Robbery, Burglary, and Sexual Assault. His current position as Sergeant requires that he, as Patrol Shift Supervisor, play a direct role in supervising other officers. Gardner held the position of Court Services Supervisor with responsibilities for courthouse security and the liaison between the Sheriff's Department and the court system. His current assignment is Liaison Officer to the School District of Rhinelander and includes the duties of the Rhinelander High School Resource Officer."
Gardner also works as an adjunct instructor in Public Safety at Nicolet Area Technical College, teaching at Nicolet's Law Enforcement Recruit Academy. He is a member of American Legion Post 431 in Three Lakes and as a veteran he takes a real interest in the issues of veterans' health and their assimilation back into our community, the release states.
"This position has been both a life and career goal," Gardner said in a the release. "I've spent my entire adult life in public service, both in the military and now in law enforcement. I am uniquely qualified for this position and have the leadership skills and knowledge necessary to make a seamless transition. I have a great working relationship with the other government agencies throughout Oneida County. I believe in being fiscally responsible and would welcome scrutiny of the department in that and all areas. I have enjoyed a great career with Oneida County and I want our current and younger officers, along with all employees, to have the same great work experience that I was fortunate enough to have. I look forward to working with the citizens of Oneida County, and listening to their concerns as well as ideas to improve the Sheriff's Office."

Incumbent sheriff Grady Hartman has yet to announce whether he intends to seek re-election. The election is set for November 2018.
