It's a wonderful Thanksgiving: Rouman Cinema employees deliver holiday meals
Employees, family and friends of Rouman Cinema personally delivered Thanksgiving meal baskets to 69 families in Rhinelander and throughout Oneida County on Sunday, Nov. 19.
This program allows movie theater employees, who are often teenage students in high school or college, to experience the joy of helping others in a time of need, according to a Rouman Cinema press release.
"Just because we live in a smaller community, many younger people take it for granted that everyone is fortunate enough to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner." George Rouman of the Rouman Amusement Company and Rouman Cinema said in a press release.
Rouman started the program in 1995, working with the Oneida County Department of Social Services to provide meals to 40 families that year. All meals are personally delivered by theater employees and volunteer members of the community.
"Contrary to what some people may think, poverty doesn't only exist in large urban areas like Milwaukee or Chicago," Rouman said. "By having these students personally deliver the meals, they have an opportunity to witness the joy and appreciation as it appears on the faces of the recipients. This experience can have a profoundly positive affect on a young person's life."
The program hit a special milestone this year as the 5000th meal was purchased and delivered.
As this program continues to evolve, its participants will never forget the message of Thanksgiving and what it truly feels like to be thankful, the release states.
The Rouman Amusement Company, Inc is a family-owned movie theater circuit which owns and operates 10 screens in two locations in Rhinelander and is celebrating 96 years of business in 2017.
