School committee approves bid for three roofing projects
Money will come from 2017-18 maintenance budget
The approved bid was $511,095. Commercial Roofing Company of Plover submitted a bid of $532,031 bid and Custofoam Corporation of Mauston said it could do the work for $722,112.
Jeff Zdroik, the district's supervisor of plant operations, said the roof at James Williams Middle School will get the bulk of the attention. Also being repaired is the roof of the press box at Mike Webster stadium and a portion of the roof at Crescent Elementary School.
The roof at JWMS has been experiencing leaks for the past couple years as well as other problems, school officials said.
"We also have a lot of the parapets that is almost like a tornado, the wind blew off, that is falling apart," Zdroik said. "So that's why I decided to do the whole roof."
"And it's been 20-plus years since this roof has been replaced?" asked board member David Holperin.
Zdroik replied in the affirmative.
Holperin then asked if these projects will dip into the extra state aid the district is due to receive over the next two years or if the projects have already been factored into the 2017-18 maintenance budget.
Zdroik said the cost was already built into the new budget when it was being put together this summer.
"We haven't had any meetings or anything yet to talk about how we're going spend that (extra state) money," said committee chair Mike Roberts. "I know there are some things in the works that will eventually come forward, but this is all normal maintenance."
District superintendent Kelli Jacobi said this is a case where projects have reached the top of the district's priority list.
"So let's get moving on them so when the weather clears in the spring we can be ready to go and we're not waiting until later in the year to bring them forward," she said.
When asked if the bids were about what he expected, Zdroik said they were.
"In doing the full roof, you save some money," Zdroik said. "I gave them different areas to bid."
He added that Maurer is the same firm that is currently working on the roof at the high school.
Zdroik said work on the replacement roof will be done in layers, as he held up a laminated sample of the foam material that is common in flat roof projects.
"Right now this roof has an R8 insulation value on it so it's probably just one of these layers of insulation," Zdroik said. "And we plan to go to R30.6, I believe. So what you'll save is about $16,000-17,000 in just heating and cooling costs."
The measure was approved by Roberts and Holperin on a voice vote. The full board, which voted in May to pursue bids on the roofing projects, will vote on the bid Monday. Committee member Ben Roskoskey was absent from the meeting.
The two also approved all but one of several proposed changes to district policies.
One of the proposed changes was tabled until Jacobi could provide additional information.
