21-year-old in custody following 6-hour standoff
According to a River News reporter on scene, the sheriff's department's special response vehicle is in the staging area along with five marked sheriff's vehicles and two Rhinelander Police Department vehicles.
According to Oneida County chief deputy Dan Hess, officers are attempting to make contact with an individual inside the house. According to police scanner traffic, there were other individuals in the residence when the call was first reported but those individuals have since exited.
UPDATE: 4:20 p.m.
The Oneida County sheriff's office reports the subject, Matthew Smith, 21, is now in custody.
According to a sheriff's office press release, officers responded to a residence on U.S. Highway 8 West just before 10 a.m. after a 9-1-1 call was received reporting a man with a gun at this residence was threatening to kill himself and others. This report later changed to the subject had a knife. There were others persons along with a child in the home besides the subject. Within the first half an hour, all but Smith exited the residence. The Oneida County Special Response Team responded to the home and the suspect was taken into custody at approximately 3:48 p.m. He was arrested for domestic violence disorderly conduct, failure to comply with an officer's attempt to take the person into custody, and multiple warrants.
The sheriff's Office continues to investigate events surrounding the incident. Also assisting was Oneida County EMS, the Rhinelander Police Department, Langlade County Sheriff's Office, the Minocqua Police Department, and GLIFWC.
