Winter Wonderland Weekend to include holiday open house, fashion show fundraiser
By Kayla Thomason-
To celebrate the shopping part of the equation, Downtown Rhinelander Inc. will sponsor a Winter Wonderland Weekend holiday open house and fashion show later this month.
The Winter Wonderland Weekend will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 17 and during regular business hours Nov. 18.
Shoppers will be given punch cards and if they get punches at 15 of the 26 participating businesses they will be eligible for a grand prize worth $1,000. The prize, which includes a number of items donated by downtown businesses, is currently on display in the Associated Bank window.
Holiday Fashion Show
The fashion show, set for 6:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Lund and Taylor Bridal Gallerie, is a fundraiser.
DRI is raising money to purchase new holiday decorations for the downtown business district, including a snowflake centerpiece for Brown and Davenport streets as well as green garland-like wraps for the light poles.
Area businesses will supply hors d'oeuvres, wine, champagne and beer for the fashion show and the salons will be helping with hair and makeup.
Rhinelander Brewing Company donated several cases of Uptown Girl® 7-ounce shorty light beer for the event.
"So that's (Uptown Girl) going to be our theme because we love the fuchsia pink for our fashion show, and we're going to use the song 'Uptown Girl,' so the fashion show is going to be light, entertaining and show fashions from all the shops downtown," said Mary Taylor, co-vice president of DRI and owner of Lund and Taylor Bridal Gallerie.
There will also be door prizes and a 50/50 raffle.
Tickets for the fashion show cost $20 for those who preregister or $25 per person at the door.
Ticket cost includes the show, three free drinks, hors d'oeuvres and an entry into a drawing. The first 100 who preregister will also get a free sparkly bracelet.
Early tickets are available at Lund and Taylor Bridal Gallerie, CT's Deli, Forth Floral and Rhinelander Brewing Company.
Decorations
Over 140 snowflake lights - one for each lightpole - have already been purchased as part of a joint effort between DRI and the city of Rhinelander.
The second phase of DRI's holiday lighting plan is to purchase lightpole wraps and a centerpiece for the intersection of Davenport and Brown streets. The final phase is animatronics. The idea is for the lights to come on at a particular time each day and/or to have a light show on the hour.
"So if you got here at 5:10 and you missed it (the light show) you have to stay in town until 6 o'clock to get the next show kind of thing," said Pat LaPorte of the DRI design committee. "So it's a way of keeping people downtown and also an attraction for them to come and see."
There are three different styles of snowflakes and two different sizes for each one of them. Some of the snowflakes have blue lights within them and others twinkle.
"We went with the snowflakes with the idea that, rather than Christmas-y stuff, we could keep them up longer because it's winter," Taylor said.
Proceeds from the fashion show will go to ward the centerpiece and new lightpole wraps, which will hopefully be purchased for next year's holiday season.
While they are waiting for more information on pricing, Taylor and LaPorte said DRI will need $40,000 to $50,000 for the centerpiece and pole wraps.
There will be donation jars at downtown businesses through December and DRI is planning more fundraisers for the lights and wraps, they added.
