Vilas County sheriff's office patrol lieutenant promoted
In a press release issued earlier this week, Sheriff Joe Fath said Ritter was previously assigned to the patrol division as a lieutenant.
"Gerard will now manage patrol operations within the sheriff's office and join the sheriff's command staff," Fath said in the press release. "Captain Ritter has received extensive training over his 16 years with Vilas County and is recognized as a law enforcement leader."
Ritter was introduced to the county board's law enforcement committee at its meeting Monday.
Fath told the committee Ritter accepted the position June 23.
"Welcome aboard, Gerry," Fath said. "He's going to be working with us on a couple of new projects as captain. We're working at back-filling his (former) position as patrol lieutenant.
Committee member Marv Anderson asked Ritter about his background.
"How long have you been in law enforcement and how long have you been here?" he asked.
"I've been with the Vilas County Sheriff's Department since 2001," Ritter said. "Prior to that, I served with the Winnebago County sheriff's reserve deputy unit as well as the Winneconne Police Department. So, I've been involved in law enforcement since about 1997 or '98."
Ritter received his associate degree from Fox Valley Technical School in Appleton.
He replaces Dave Gardner who retired from the department in early June.
