There was hope the rain would hold off until after weigh-in, but wind and cool temperatures did little to increase creature comforts for those out in search of brown and green bass.
Several teams reported having three or four fish already in the box in the first hour, but then struggled to fill out their five-fish limit before the end of the day.
The tournament was a grind for most, but 24 teams were able to bring limits of fish to the scales at the end of the day.
Several fish over four pounds were brought to the scales, both smallmouth and largemouth. The team of Gunnar Tessmer and Michael Perkins, who took first place with a 15.59-pound bag, also caught a smallmouth weighing in at 4.33 pounds.
The check for big largemouth went to the second place team of Claire and Raffe Hulce. Their five-fish limit came in at 14.92 pounds.
In third place was the 13.70-pound limit of Adam Olszewski and Dan Kinsella. Chris and Mike Withers took fourth with a 13.66-pound limit. Fifth place went to Matt and Dan Hirman with 13.35 pounds.
In all 171 fish were weighed in for a total of 413.34 pounds. Only three teams were unable to bring any fish to the scales. The River Series pays down to ninth place, with the first place pay out for this event, which had a full field of 45 boats, being $1,730.50.
The River Series holds four one-day qualifying events throughout the area during the summer.
Lake Nokomis was the second stop, with the first stop being the Stevens Point Flowage.
The next stop on the tour will be Boom Lake in Rhinelander on July 22. From there the teams will take on Lake Mohawksin in August. Teams make their way to the championship based on Team of the Year points standings. The championship this year will be on the Minocqua Chain on Sept. 9 and 10. Tournament headquarters will be the Beacons of Minocqua. Take off each day is at 7 a.m. and weigh in starts at 3 p.m. The public is encouraged to come and watch the anglers as they weigh in their days catches, all vying for the ultimate prize: Team of the Year.
