Frank "Dan" Carlson, age 64, of Rhinelander, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 20, 2017. He was born May 10, 1953, in Wausau, to Donald and Emily "Dollie" Carlson. Dan was born on Mother's Day and Dollie always said, "He was the best Mother's Day gift she could have ever received."

Dan graduated from Rhinelander High School in 1971, earned an associate's degree from Nicolet College, and then completed his studies with a bachelor's degree in biology from UW-Stevens Point. He was employed at the Rhinelander Paper Company for 28 years.

Dan resided on Fourth Lake of the Moen Lake Chain for nearly 50 years and was a historian of the area. It was there that he enjoyed fishing, hunting, sharing pontoon boat tours of the chain with family and friends, and having summer campfires on the shore of Fourth Lake. He was active in the Moen Lake Chain Association and the "Clean Boats" program. Dan was a true outdoorsman who worked to develop and manage the forest on his 165 acres in the Town of Pelican. He was named "Tree Farmer of the Year" for his efforts and the trees he planted and cared for will be his legacy for generations to come. In retirement, he was always busy with a project, installing docks, and acting as caretaker for numerous cottages on the Moen and Three Lakes Chains.

Dan was a friendly, fun-loving man who reached out to anyone in need of his help. He was a much loved son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, and friend who left this world much too soon. He will be greatly missed.

Dan is survived by his mother, Dollie Carlson of Rhinelander; his sister, Dr. Diane Carlson (Reid Buell) of Sacramento, Calif.; his brother, Ted Carlson of Rhinelander; a niece, Jennifer Carlson; nephew, Ted "TJ" Carlson, and a cousin, Sonya (Ben) Dunbar. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Carlson.

Visitation for Dan will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 26, 2017, at the Carlson Funeral Home (715-369-1414). Red Pine tree saplings will be available for visitors to take and plant in memory of Dan's commitment to the growth and management of our Northern forests. Private burial will take place in Forest Home Cemetery. Condolences for the family may be directed to www.carlsonfh.com.

In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, the family would suggest support of a memorial in Dan's name for the benefit of Wild Instincts Wildlife Rehab Center and contributions may be directed in care of his family.
