James E. Fondie

James E. Fondie, age 70, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017, surrounded by his family and care team at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He was born July 29, 1946, in Rhinelander to Frank and Berdella Fondie.

Jim is survived by his daughters, Pamela (Keith) Krueger of Rhinelander and Amy (Jose) Castellanos of Mattoon; his son, Christopher (Nicole) Fondie of Rhinelander; a brother, John Fondie of Rhinelander; and his grandchildren, Jessica (Derek) Krouze, Danielle (Andy Maas) Krueger, Andilynn Krueger, Martina and Jeovoni Castellanos, and Zoey Fondie. He is further survived by his much adored Chihuahua, Roxy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Karen Fondie; daughter, Melissa Fondie; and his sister, Jean Greene, all of Rhinelander.

Jim attended Pine Lake School and Rhinelander High School.

In 1966, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he earned many medals and award letters for his outstanding performance. He served in the Navy for six years during the Vietnam War. Jim married the love of his life, Karen on May 4, 1967.

He worked in Rhinelander as a machinist for many years and as an over-the-road truck driver, a profession he greatly enjoyed. Jim also enjoyed fishing with his dad and wife, Karen, at the family cottage, riding his motorcycle, and watching football, especially Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. He loved NASCAR and was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan. Jim also loved listening to old country, rock 'n roll, and Elvis Presley. Some of his favorite movies included "The Godfather" and "Secretariat" and he also enjoyed old westerns and the TV show, NCIS with his favorite characters, Gibbs and Ziva David. He further enjoyed watching Don Imus, cooking and food shows, and car shows including the Barrett-Jackson auctions. Jim very much enjoyed old cars and trucks, especially muscle cars which included his 1969 Pontiac GTO "Judge."

Jim was a very strong man who battled many serious health issues over the past 10 years and fought hard until the end. He absolutely loved and adored his grandchildren and his "pup" Roxy.

He will be greatly missed."Fair Winds and Following Seas."

A graveside service with Chaplain John Uhlarik officiating with military honors to follow will begin at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at Forest Home Cemetery.
