New basketball court could solve Lake Tomahawk parking issue
According to the town board, parking for town events, such as the World Musky Hunt, has become congested. With minimal side streets and alleys, vehicles have been known to fill in tight spaces, leaving driving conditions on those streets less than desirable, supervisors mentioned during the group's June 12 meeting.
With the construction of the basketball court behind the Sloan Community Center, town board supervisor Matt Michaelson said the parks committee is hoping to create space for 25 to 35 parking spaces.
"My hope is parking will be constructed along with the court in three different segments," Michaelson said. "Hopefully diagonal parking along the road, between the alley and the Pizza Vault and bumping up next to the Sloan building. I think this will be something that benefits not only this town but anyone who comes and visits."
The basketball court will be behind the community center, which would place it within easy walking distance of the businesses along State Highway 47. The parks committee also discussed holding the town Christmas tree lighting event at the court location during the winter.
"In the future we're looking to have the Christmas tree lighting there and maybe some benches and tables," Michaelson said. "It's right by the Shamrock, Umlaf's, the Pizza Vault - it's centrally located."
Two heavy-duty basketball hoops will be ordered from Chippewa Sporting Goods in Eau Claire with a price tag of $2,020, including shipping and handling.
In the coming months the town will put the project out to bid for the blacktopping of the court and parking spaces.
