Thom was born and raised in Detroit, Mich. and began his career at the Ford Motor Company. He met his wife, Jill, at Western Michigan University; they were married in 1973. In 1985, after earning a divinity degree from Dallas Theological Seminary, Thom and Jill moved to Deforest. They would not leave Wisconsin again except for another few years in Texas. Thomas worked as an engineer, a pastor, and a businessman with his last full-time job running Superior Diesel in Rhinelander from 2001 - 2015.
Thom was outgoing, gregarious, and loved people. He had a deep faith in God and passionately studied the Bible. He is survived by his wife Jill Ann Umlauf, their children and spouses - Joe and Liz, Sarah and Kevin, Daniel and Abby, and Ben - as well as 10 grandchildren: Thomas, Timothy, Tennyson, Trenton, Todd, Malia, Troy, Happy, Annabelle, and Moses.
Thom enjoyed the Northwoods and took immeasurable joy in his grandkids. He cherished his time taking them off-roading, teaching them to ice skate, shooting BB guns, and his famous doughnut breakfast trips.
There will be a graveside service at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Union Vienna Cemetery in Waunakee. Dress will be casual and a luncheon will follow at Thom and Jill's home with further instructions and directions provided at the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Fort Wilderness or Camp Awesum.
