Plane lands safely in Arbor Vitae despite landing gear malfunction
It turned out the pilot, the only person onboard, was unable to lock the gear in place.
He circled the airport to burn off fuel and to give responding fire and rescue personnel time to assemble at the airport and develop a response plan.
By the time the pilot made his attempt to land on the airport's north/south runway, there were fire and rescue personnel from Arbor Vitae, Woodruff and Minocqua standing by as well as an Oneida County ambulance crew. The north/south runway was shut down and the pilot attempted his landing, accompanied by a Vilas County sheriff's deputy in a police vehicle to his left. As the plane landed, screeching could be heard as the nose wheel locked up.
The right landing gear then collapsed and the pilot was able to get the plane safely to a stop. Vilas County Emergency Management director Jim Galloway was among those on the ground who was relieved. "It's always good when it's a non-incident," he said.
