Downtown merchants planning block party to celebrate completion of streetscape project
By Kayla Thomason-
The streetscape project, which was completed June 30, involved upgrades to the underground infrastructure in a 21-block area as well as new sidewalks, lighting and pavement. Completed over the course of two summers, the construction was difficult for the downtown business district as merchants struggled to draw customers while key downtown roadways were largely inaccessible.
Two blocks of downtown, from Rives Street to King Street, will be blocked off for this large community feast. A long row of tables and chairs will be located near CT's Deli, where there will be free cake and ice cream. Many restaurants will be offering their food in to-go containers so people can eat out on the street.
"It's pretty cool when you look at it, like 30 tables all lined up in the middle of the street," said Rhonda Jicinsky, Downtown Rhinelander promotion committee member and co-owner of CT's Deli.
Vendors and businesses will also have merchandise for sale out on the sidewalks.
Besides delicious food and sales, everyone can participate in the sidewalk chalk contest to be judged at 1 and 4 p.m. Winners will receive a gift card to a downtown business.
"It's open to any age," Jicinsky said. "You sign up for it then you're assigned a little section on the sidewalk."
At 2 p.m. Mayor Dick Johns will read a proclamation and share a few fun facts about the streetscape project.
Following the proclamation, the Rhinelander Fire Department and Police Department, and local businesses, will go head-to-head in relay races.
"They're going to have to put on a fireman's suit, shoot something with the super soaker, they're going to have to eat a donut, just simple relay races," Jicinsky said.
The winner of the relay races will have money sent to the charity of their choice.
This money was donated by the local contractors who worked on the Streetscape project, as well as Downtown Rhinelander Inc.
A Hula Hoop Contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. It will be open to all age groups and there will be a bracket system where the winner of one match will go on to the next.
Winners will also receive a gift card to a downtown business.
Children can burn some energy in the bounce house, and get festive at the face painting booth, both of which will be available all day.
The comedic magician - The Amazing Zachman Magician - will delight the crowds at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
Live music is also planned.
Ron Harrison will perform from 2 to 5 p.m., and The Influence will play from 5 to 8 p.m.
"It's a celebration of completion of our new and improved downtown," Jicinsky said.
