Jewell Frieda DeCanter Springer, age 91, of Rockwall, Texas died peacefully at Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas on Aug. 11, 2017

Jewell was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Rhinelander, to Emma and Charles DeCanter.

She had five sisters and one brother; Echo, Evelyn, Mary, Charlene, Kathleen and Dean. Jewell attended school in Rhinelander and graduated in 1943 as a proud "Hodag" (which is the Rhinelander High School mythical mascot from the Northwoods logging era).

After graduating in the midst of World War II, she moved to Milwaukee with her friend and became a "Rosie the Riveter" employed by Allis Chalmers, a tractor manufacturing company transformed from civilian to wartime machinery works.

After the war, Jewell met returning Marine GI, Henry G. Springer, Jr. He was attending University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where they were married in 1948. They moved on to Madison while Henry finished his degree. During this time Jewell became a ballroom dance instructor for Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Dancing became one of her true passions for the rest of her life. Together, after Henry's graduation, they moved to Chicago for his employment with Campbell Soup Company. They relocated several times during his 37 year career with Campbell's which ended at the plant in Paris, Texas.

Jewell is survived by Bradley Springer and wife Lana of Garland, Texas and Julie Springer of Rockwall Texas. Grandchildren: Ashley Hino, Charles Pflieger and Chad Pflieger. Siblings: Mary DeCanter of Independence, Ore. and Charlene Meyer of Llano, Texas.

She was preceded in death by Henry G. Springer Jr.; sisters Echo, Evelyn, Kathleen, and brother, Dean.

Over the years Jewell was involved with numerous organizations such as 4-H, PTA, Welcome Wagon, Lady Elks, Bridge Club, Altar Guild, Episcopal Church Women, the Republican Party, Paris Garden Club, Paris Community Theater, St. Joseph's hospital in Paris Texas, and most recently she served as an office angel at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Heath.

Jewell Springer's memorial service was held Friday, Aug. 18, 2017 at 2 p.m. at Holy Trinity by The Lake Episcopal Church, Heath, Texas Fr. Keith Turbeville officiated.

At a later date, there will be Internment services at both Holy Cross Episcopal Church, Paris, Texas and Forest Home Cemetary, Rhinelander.

Thank you to those who cared for Jewell at Presbyterian Hospital of Rockwall, Presbyterian Hospital of Dallas and Season's Hospice Care of Dallas. A special thanks to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church women Thursday night dinner group. Jewell looked forward to their monthly outings!
