Stevens Point brothers win River Series Mohawksin qualifier
This was the fourth and final stop for the series before the championship and every team's last chance to secure their spot in that big tournament. The championship will be held on the Minocqua Chain in early September, with the host business being The Beacons of Minocqua. Entry into the championship is determined by Team of the Year points. The points system is a cumulative points system, with points being awarded at each of the four qualifiers throughout the summer. The top 34 teams are invited to the championship, with Team of the Year and Defending Champions of the previous year rounding out the field. Cash prizes were given for first through ninth place as well as for big largemouth and big smallmouth.
Two brothers from Stevens Point, Dan and Matt Hirman, bested the rest of the field last Sunday, bringing in a limit of fish for 16.41 pounds. From there, weights dropped to just over 12 with Todd Holtman and Joe Heitschmidt taking second place with their 12.13-pound bag. Third place went to Robin Pester and Andy Dassow, who have 12.26 pounds in their five-fish limit.
All of these teams have spent a good deal of time on Lake Mohawksin and have fished their share of tournaments there. Experience paid off and they were rewarded for the work they put in. Twenty-seven of the 45 teams participating were able to bring 5-fish limits to the scales at SARA Park that afternoon. Only six teams were unable to catch a legal-size fish.
In all, 172 fish were brought to the scales for a total weight of 358.95 pounds. This put the average fish at just over two pounds. Bigger fish were caught, of course, such as the winning largemouth that won big bass, a 4.34-pounder brought in by Heitschmidt and Holtman and the big smallmouth of Nic Treder and Chris Webster, which tipped the scales at 3.87 pounds. The average limit of fish was just over 10.5 pounds and it would take just over that to cash a check in the derby. From here, points will be tallied and invitations for the 2017 championship sent out to those who qualified. The championship will be held Sept. 9 and 10 at The Beacons. Weigh-in each day will be at 3 p.m. The public is invited to attend the weigh in, talk to the anglers and see what they bring in as they all vie for the title of champion.
