The Rhinelander Fire Department extinguished a fire in a detached garage on Balsam Street Thursday morning. According to Fire Chief Terry Williams, the first crews arrived on the scene three minutes after the page to find flames shooting 40 feet into the air. He said firefighters used larger than normal hoses to put a lot of water on the fire quickly. He noted that the back of the house was starting to smoke and was likely no more than two minutes away from igniting when they knocked down the fire. A boat, ATV and various other items were inside the garage, which was a total loss. There were no injuries reported. Williams said the fire was caused by overcharging of boat batteries. He is awaiting a report from the insurance adjuster before assigning a dollar value to the loss.
