Barb graduated from high school in 1953 and worked as a "Candy Striper" before moving to Sugar Camp with her family in 1955. Barb's focus was raising her family of five children and, in later years, being a grandmother. She always said grandchildren were much more fun because "you can give them back to their mother when you are tired." Barb was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper for the local Red Cross unit and then served in a similar capacity with the Northern Area Agency on Aging. She married Leonard Bauman on Sept. 5, 1981, and they enjoyed over 35 years together.
The guiding principle in Barb's life could be summoned up in one word, "Volunteerism." She was very active in the Oneida County chapter of the American Red Cross, serving as chairman and recording secretary and was instrumental in establishing the Bloodmobile donation program in Rhinelander as well as being a regular blood donor. She spent many long nights securing emergency leave through the Red Cross for active military members who needed to get home for funerals and other family events. She was a long-time member of the women's auxiliaries for both the V.F.W. and American Legion and held many offices within the organizations including terms as president, treasurer, secretary, and district officer. She helped to establish the V.F.W. Auxiliary marching unit and raised funds for the establishment of the Veterans Monument at the Oneida County Courthouse. Barb was also active in the Mable Chapter of the Eastern Star #181, Job's Daughters, and the White Shrine of Jerusalem Harmony Shrine #25. Other memberships included the Military Order of the Cooties, Northwoods Amateur Radio Club, NHS Computer Club, Sew and So Homemakers Club, and the Good Sam Camping Club. Barb was a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Canasta.
Barb's impact on her community can never be adequately expressed in these few lines, but she will be fondly remembered and loved by those whose lives she touched and improved by her tireless efforts and spirit.
Barb is survived by her husband, Leonard Bauman of Rhinelander; her five children, Marian (Brian) O'Melia of Summerville, S.C., James Polinski of Rhinelander, Roy Polinski of Wausau, Theresa Blaszke of Rhinelander and John (Marti) Polinski of East Prairie, Mo.; grandchildren, Thomas, Kristina, Britney, Mandy, Austin, Stephanie, Bradley, Sean, Carri, and Kevin; great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Carrie (Richard) Schubert of Crystal City, Mo., Leonard Bauman Jr. of Clearwater, Fla., and Sharon Pickard of Festus, Mo.; stepgrandchildren, Michelle, Kevin, Jennifer, Rachel, and Randall; brother, Richard (Diane) Aubert of Chicago, IL; and sister-in-law, Ruby Aubert of Williston, SC. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
