Dr.Jim Dyreby and his wife purchased a 250-acre farm in the town of Crescent several years ago and started farming it organically. Dyreby intends to make organic farming his full-time activity after he retires from his career as an orthopedic surgeon at the end of this year. His current farming practices are meant to return nutrients lost to the soil due to conventional farming practices that took place here for years, he said.

He has also planted pollinator corridors to attract pollinators to his field.

Just down the road on

Squash Lake, Dan Butkus has undertaken a pollinator project of his own. He said he has noticed a difference since the Dyreby farm changed over to organic gardening. Not only are the pesticide smells gone but he has seen an increase in pollinators in the area as well.

His three-year shoreline restoration project was the first in the state to be completed through the Healthy Lakes program.
