Antlerless tags go on sale Aug. 14
The Oneida County CDAC recommended the harvest of 850 antlerless deer. At a success rate of 35 percent, 2,400 tags would be issued. Public land hunters would receive 700 tags while those hunting private would be allotted 1,700 tags. There was a great deal of public input at the CDAC meetings earlier this year which lead to this decision. There was also input at the meetings from Department of Natural Resources biologists and other experts who agreed the deer herd in the county could withstand the harvest of some antlerless deer and still see an increase in population. With the milder winter last winter, the population is still expected to increase as does come through the winter in better condition. Many hunters have reported seeing more does with two fawns this spring, lending some credence to the idea that the herd can withstand this type of hunt.
Bonus antlerless tags go on sale in August
Those looking to snag a bonus antlerless tag should mark Monday, Aug. 14 on their calendar. Bonus antlerless tags will go on sale in both the Northern Forest and Central Forest Zones at 10 a.m. that day. They will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Bonus tags will be $5 for 10- and 11-year-olds, $12 for residents and $20 for nonresidents. Central Farmland Zone tags go on sale Aug. 15 and Southern Farmland tags go on sale Aug. 16. Tag sales begin at 10 a.m. each day. On Aug. 17, the remainder of the tags for every zone will go on sale until they are sold out or the season ends. According to the DNR website, tags can be purchased at the rate of one tag per person per day until sold out or until the season ends. Tags can be purchased at a DNR Service Center, a license sales location or on the Go Wild website: gowild.wi.gov.
Hunters are reminded that bonus tags are not weapon-specific, but they are zone and land-type specific. Hunters who hunt on Managed Forest Land or Forest Crop Land, which is private land open to the public for hunting and other recreational uses, must have a public land antlerless tag.
